Ultrasounds
Ultrasonography (commonly known as ultrasound) is a non-invasive, pain-free diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to create detailed images of your pet’s internal organs and tissues. This procedure is highly effective in evaluating a pet’s heart, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, bladder, and more. It can also detect abnormalities such as tumors, cysts, abscesses, or fluid buildup. Ultrasound is frequently used to monitor pregnancy and assess the health of the developing puppies or kittens.
When Might Your Pet Need an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound can be recommended for a variety of reasons, including:
- Unexplained weight loss or vomiting
- Changes in appetite or behavior
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Signs of urinary issues or difficulty urinating
- Monitoring chronic conditions, such as kidney disease
- Confirming pregnancy or assessing fetal health
- Identifying and monitoring masses, cysts, or tumors
- Detecting fluid accumulation in the abdomen or chest
How Does the Ultrasound Procedure Work?
During the ultrasound, a special gel is applied to your pet’s skin, allowing the transducer (a small handheld device) to glide smoothly and provide the clearest image possible. The transducer sends sound waves into your pet’s body, and these waves bounce back to create visual representations of the internal structures. The images are then displayed on a monitor and recorded for the veterinarian to analyze.
Ultrasound does not involve radiation, has no known side effects, and typically doesn’t require sedation or anesthesia for most pets. However, we may shave the area being examined to ensure the clearest possible images.
